Lost-bag numbers plunge by more than 1 million in 2008

The
20 biggest U.S. passenger carriers lost 1.3 million fewer pieces of
luggage in 2008, according to new figures from the Bureau of
Transportation Statistics. Experts say the dramatic improvement is
due largely to bag-check fees, which have sharply decreased the
number of bags turned over to airlines for safekeeping during
flight. "The fewer bags you check, the fewer bags you lose," says

without correct change into a whole new kind of holding pattern?
The head of budget European
airline Ryanair unleashed a flood of indignation and potty humor
Friday when he suggested that future passengers might be obliged to
insert a British pound coin for access to the lavatory to get some
in-flight relief.
Michael O'Leary, the voluble CEO of European discount leader Ryanair,
set off a firestorm of protest when he suggested on Friday that
passengers might have to pay for using in-flight lavatories. A
company spokesman said there were "no immediate plans to introduce"
such a charge, though it might help reduce fares. A spokesman for
the Air Transport Association said he wasn't aware of any U.S.
carriers considering the fee.
