Pirates of the 21st century Posted 06/09/2009 "This year alone, the pirates’ ransom demands
have topped over $150 million. As the international community stands
outraged and launches joint naval operations to protect merchant
fleets, the pirates cry foul, claiming they are only trying to
survive after losing their livelihoods to foreign vessels who
pillage their fishing grounds and dump toxic waste. Somalia is under
international weapons sanctions, and warlord groups continue to
fight against the Ethiopian peacekeeping mission in the country –
and each other. But an influx of money is likely to mean a further
influx of weapons to the war-torn land. In a country where most
people live on less than $1 a day and Islamic insurgents tighten
their grip across the country, creating the threat of another
Afghanistan, the most pressing question is just who benefits from
the big money being made from Somalia’s maritime gangsterism?"
"An international forum on tackling
piracy off the coast of Somalia has opened in Rome. Aside
from talking about measures to prevent hijackings,"
International Piracy Meeting Posted 06/09/2009
"Seoul's piracy meeting is attended by representatives from
34 countries and international maritime organizations. Here
delegates discuss the role that international organizations
can play in suppressing piracy. They also talk about what
needs to happen in Somalia for the piracy to stop."
Italy won't back blitz to rescue
hostages held by Somali pirates
Posted 06/09/2009 "An armed operation
to rescue hostages on board an Italian tugboat held by
Somali pirates would be too
risky, Italy's Foreign Minister Franco
Frattini indicated Tuesday.
Frattini
discussed the plight of the 16-man crew of the Buccaneer
in talks with
Somali
Prime Minister Umar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke during an
international meeting in Rome
to discuss the escalating violence in the Horn of Africa
nation."
