Travel health report:
Togo Cholera Outbreak
On December
31, 2008, the U.S. Embassy
Lome issued the following Warden Message :
"This warden
message is being issued to alert American citizens that health
officials in Togo
have reported a cholera outbreak. The most
affected areas are in the capitol city of
Lomé, where 300 cases and 3 deaths have been
reported.
"Cholera is a
potentially fatal bacterial infection that causes diarrhea and
dehydration. The disease is spread through
untreated sewage and contaminated drinking water as well as food
exposed to contaminated water such as shellfish.
Travelers to Togo
are advised to drink boiled or bottled water and also to use boiled
or bottled water in food preparation. There is
no cholera vaccine available in the
U.S.
"We also
strongly recommend that American citizens register their presence in
Togo through our Consular
Information Program. Travel registration is a free service provided
by the U.S. Government to
U.S. citizens who are traveling to,
or living in, a foreign country. Registration
allows you to record information about your upcoming trip abroad
that the Department of State can use to assist you in case of an
emergency. Americans residing abroad can also get
routine information from the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. You
may register online at
https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs,
or in person at the Embassy.
"Embassy
hours for American Citizens Services are Monday through Thursday
from 13:30 to 15:30. The Embassy is located at Boulevard Eyadema,
B.P. 852, Lomé. In case of an emergency,
U.S. citizens may come to the
Embassy’s consular section during any hours of operation or call the
Embassy at 228-261-5470. For routine visa,
passport, notarial questions, etc., please e-mail
Consularlome@state.gov
or visit

Travel Advisories
The Australian
Department of Foreign Affairs gives the following advice Australians
who are traveling, working or living in Togo: "Be a smart traveller. Before heading overseas, organise comprehensive travel
insurance and check what circumstances and activities are not
covered by your policy."
The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office gives the following advice
British people who are traveling, working or living in Togo: "We
strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical
insurance before travelling. This should cover medical evacuation by
air ambulance. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy
covers you for all the activities you want to undertake."
The Canadian Foreign Affairs Office gives the following advice to
Canadians who are traveling, working or living in Togo: "Do not
rely on your provincial health plan to cover costs if you get sick
or are injured while abroad. Out-of-country healthcare can be
costly, and your health plan will cover only part of the bill at
best. It is your responsibility to obtain supplementary travel
insurance and understand the terms of your policy. Some credit card
companies offer their holders health and travel insurance. Do not
assume that coverage is automatically included or that the card
alone provides adequate coverage."
The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade gives the
following advice to New Zealanders: "New Zealanders travelling or
resident in Togo should have comprehensive medical and travel
insurance policies in place that include provision for medical
evacuation by air."
The U.S. Department of State gives the following advice to Americans
who are traveling, working or living in Togo: "We strongly urge
you to consult with their medical insurance company prior to
traveling abroad to confirm whether their policy applies overseas
and whether it will cover emergency expenses such as a medical
evacuation and overseas medical services. Please keep in mind that
Medicare does not cover any illness or injury that occurs outside of
the United States."
