Kidnapped American in Istanbul, Turkey

A female employee of a U.S. organization was abducted from the Istanbul International Airport on January 9, 2007. Transportation arrangements had been made by the victim's employer to pick her up from the airport using a local car service. As the employee entered the arrivals area, she was approached by a male who called her by her first name. When she responded, the male told the employee he was her driver and would take her to the organization's office. The female employee left with the imposter driver, trusting his friendly demeanor.

During the drive, the driver stopped to purchase coffee for himself and the employee. The ride continued after the brief stop, the employee drank the coffee and began to feel weak and dizzy. She was contacted on her cell phone by a concerned colleague, who felt her arrival to the office was overdue. The driver asked to speak with the colleague on the phone and explained they would be arriving in just a few minutes. The driver then turned off the cell phone and did not return it to the employee.

After the ride continued for a long period without arriving at the office, and realizing she had been drugged, the employee ran from the car as it slowed down in traffic. She found help at a nearby residence and contacted local authorities. She was admitted to the hospital for tests and monitoring for any possible side-effects caused by the drugs. She did not sustain any injuries or illness from the incident. Authorities
are currently investigating the incident.

OSAC reminds travelers to exercise caution when approached by individuals offering rides or posing as legitimate car service drivers. OSAC constituents have adopted several strategies when utilizing a prearranged car service abroad. These pre-departure strategies include: obtaining local drivers' names and photographs, having the traveler call the driver directly upon arrival, and establishing a code-word system between the driver and traveler.

In addition, OSAC receives reports of many scams involving drugged beverages and encourages travelers to remain aware of their surroundings and to decline beverages offered by individuals. For further resources on how to avoid becoming a victim, please refer to
OSAC's Turkey country page.
